COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a survey of American Government in theory and practice. Topics include individual rights and responsibilities, politics in America, the federal government, and Washington State government.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The required course will acquaint the student with the necessary information to become an active member of our democratic system. The three branches of government, the levels of government, and the interaction of these institutions will be examined. Foreign and domestic policies of our government will be studied and discussed. The U.S. Constitution will be a major emphasis of study as we examine the changing nature of our society as it is anchored by the political genius of the founding fathers. We will have guest speakers and various written and video materials to assist us in learning about our system of government, if you miss class; it is your responsibility to go to the blog (on the footer) and check it for the assignments/activities you may have missed.

COURSE MATERIALS:

McClenaghan, William A. Magruder’s American Government. Needham, MA: Prentice-Hall, 2007.

Student Notebook (to be checked throughout the semester) three-ring binder type preferred; first Notebook check Friday, September 2nd. The first page should be the class syllabus, signed by your parent/guardian.

Twelve Angry Men ( a teleplay about the jury system)

Presidential mock election between Republican, Democratic, and Libertarian candidates (1st Quarter)

GRADING SYSTEM: the course will revolve around the following grade weights: 50% for Chapter Tests, 25% for the class notebook, 15% for the Research project, and 10% for the participation grade. You are invited to come in to see me before or after school to check on your grades. The research project will be a 5-minute speech based on a Supreme Court Case during the 2nd quarter. . Students may wish to use their class papers or other research activities as part of their portfolios/culminating activity.
Reminder: If you are absent and miss a test, you have the same number of days to make it up before or after school that you were sick; i.e. if you were out two days, you have two school days to make it up upon your return. After those two days, you will receive a zero in the gradebook.

MODERN WORLD HISTORY Syllabus

Hanford High School Social Studies

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a survey of western civilization beginning with the Renaissance and ending with World War I and its aftermath. Other topics include the Reformation, the Age of Revolutions, the Industrial Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. This course rests heavily on student writing and research. Students may wish to use their class papers or other research activities as part of their portfolios/culminating activities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Knowledge and Skills objectives include, but are nor limited to: scribes, manuscript illumination, written knowledge as a sacred hierarchy, the focus on the afterlife, art in the service of religion, Giotto, Masaccio, Leonardo, Michelangelo and the Medicis, belief in the individual, focus on the present life, art for art’s sake, Luther and the Protestant Reformation, the printing press, the Diet of Worms, the Peace of Augsburg, the Counter-Reformation, Henry VIII and Anglicanism, France and the Huguenots, the Age of the Conquistadors, the Commercial Revolution and the Dissenters, Absolutism, the reign of Czar Peter the Great, enlightened despotism, Rousseau & Hobbes, the Enlightenment, Montesquieu, the Three Estates, the Reign of Terror, the conquests of Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna, the Age of Nationalism and Colonialism, Capitalism v. Marxism, the new Industrial Warfare, Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations and the Age of Imperialism.

A Man for All Seasons (feature film concerning Thomas More, who defied Henry VIII in his attempt to build a new religion for England for the purpose of divorcing his first wife)

Out of Africa (feature film dealing with the British involvement in Kenya during World War I and after) There are alternate assignments available.

GRADING SYSTEM: the course will revolve around the following grade weights: 50% for Chapter Tests, 25% for the class notebook, 15% for the research project, and 10% for the participation part of your grade. You are invited to come in to see me before or after school to check on your grades. Mid-Quarter progress reports will be sent home with you or mailed through the office. The class notebook should be devoted exclusively to World History, and should have as its front page this syllabus, signed by your parent/guardian. Checking the blog (listed below) will be a great help to you as your prepare for the chapter tests. It is also helpful for those who have missed the class because of illness or prearranged absence.

My oldest sister was born that day, even as my father fought the war in the Pacific to make a better world for all of us. Let's not forget the sacrifices made by ordinary people which allowed the United States of America to crush Hitler and his Nazi empire.
